Hi Friends,
There's a conversation I've been having a lot lately, and I want to share it with you.
Living in DC, I keep meeting people navigating layoffs — government, corporate, across the board. When I tell them what I do, so many respond with some version of: "I thought I found my purpose, but I was wrong" or "I thought God showed me my purpose, but I must have missed it. What do I do now?" My heart breaks every time.
Perhaps you've been there too — a layoff, a dream job that didn't pan out, a venture that didn't survive. If so, you know the pain behind those words.
Here's what I want you to hear.
Purpose is your unique blueprint to bring hope and healing to a broken world — doing the things you love to solve the problems that move you, leading to a fulfilling life that removes obstacles for others and restores the good things that have been broken.
The things you are uniquely designed to see, and the way you bring hope, are not tied to a specific role or project. Confusing the two tells us the lie that we are of no use to God or the world until we land the perfect job. That is simply not true.
Assignment is the project, role, season, or situation you find yourself in — chosen or not. You can bring healing, restoration, and reconciliation anywhere, even in the seasons you didn't see coming. In fact, bringing your purpose into an undesirable assignment can transform things in ways you never imagined.
Your dream assignment comes when two things align: God's timing for the world to receive what you carry, and your dedication and prayer in naming it and taking steps toward it.
Your dream assignment is not out of reach — it is being prepared, and so are you.
We live out our purpose by bringing hope, healing, and restoration wherever we are, while actively preparing for our dream assignment. Assignments change with the seasons. Purpose doesn't — it only gets clearer as we name it and live into it.
God loves you far too much to anchor your identity to an earthly role. He is inviting you into something better: a partnership to join Him in bringing hope and healing to a broken world.
If this stirred something in you, you may want to journal these questions.
Take a few minutes to journal:
- God, where have I confused my purpose with my assignment?
- What lies or false beliefs do you want me to let go of?
- What truth do you want me to know?
With joy and wonder,
Ashley Gordon
These letters are crafted through hours of prayer, research, and writing — and they will always be free. If one of them has added something to your life and you'd like to fuel the work, I receive that with deep gratitude.
